وسط دفعة جديدة من الوثائق التي أفرجت عنها وزارة العدل الأمريكية، برز اسم الطبيب والإعلامي الشهير محمد أوز في مراسلات تعود إلى عام 2016، تتضمن دعوة لحضور احتفال بعيد الحب موجّهة إلى رجل الأعمال المدان بجرائم جنسية جيفري إبستين.
الوثائق التي نُشرت امتثالًا لقانون أقرّه الكونغرس بدعم من الحزبين، كشفت أن رسالة بريد إلكتروني مؤرخة في الأول من فبراير 2016 أُرسلت من أوز وزوجته، وتحمل عنوانًا يشير إلى احتفال بعيد الحب، مع رابط لدعوة رقمية.
واللافت أن الدعوة جاءت بعد نحو عقد من توجيه أولى التهم الجنسية إلى إبستين عام 2006، ما أعاد الجدل حول طبيعة علاقاته بدوائر السياسة والإعلام والأعمال، والتي لا تزال تكشفها الوثائق تباعًا.
وأكدت وزارة العدل الأمريكية أن أوز الذي اختاره الرئيس دونالد ترمب لإدارة مراكز الرعاية الصحية والخدمات الطبية غير متهم بأي مخالفات تتعلق بقضية إبستين. كما ورد اسمه في رسالة أخرى مؤرخة في يناير 2016، لكن محتواها حُجب بالكامل في النسخة المنشورة.
وعادت القضية بقوة إلى الواجهة بعد جلسات استماع عقدتها لجنة الرقابة في مجلس النواب، حيث طُلب من شريكة إبستين السابقة غيسلين ماكسويل الإدلاء بشهادتها، إلا أنها رفضت الاستجابة ولجأت إلى التعديل الخامس من الدستور الأمريكي.
وتقضي ماكسويل حكمًا بالسجن 20 عامًا بعد إدانتها بالتورط في شبكة الاتجار الجنسي التي كان يديرها إبستين، فيما تتواصل السجالات السياسية حول ما إذا كانت ستدلي بشهادة كاملة مقابل عفو محتمل، وهو ما يثير انقسامًا حادًا داخل الأوساط السياسية.
ومع كل دفعة جديدة من الوثائق، تتسع دائرة الأسماء التي تظهر في مراسلات إبستين، لتعيد فتح ملفٍ ظلّ لسنوات أحد أكثر القضايا إثارة للجدل في الولايات المتحدة.
Amid a new batch of documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice, the name of the famous doctor and media personality Mehmet Oz emerged in correspondence dating back to 2016, which includes an invitation to a Valentine's Day celebration addressed to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The documents, published in compliance with a law passed by Congress with bipartisan support, revealed that an email dated February 1, 2016, was sent from Oz and his wife, bearing a subject line indicating a Valentine's Day celebration, along with a link to a digital invitation.
Notably, the invitation came about a decade after the first sexual charges were directed at Epstein in 2006, reigniting the debate over the nature of his relationships within political, media, and business circles, which the documents continue to unveil sequentially.
The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that Oz, who was appointed by President Donald Trump to oversee health care and medical services, is not accused of any wrongdoing related to the Epstein case. His name also appeared in another email dated January 2016, but its content was fully redacted in the published version.
The case has forcefully returned to the forefront following hearings held by the House Oversight Committee, where Epstein's former associate Ghislaine Maxwell was asked to testify, but she refused to respond and invoked the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of involvement in the sex trafficking network run by Epstein, while political debates continue over whether she will provide full testimony in exchange for a potential pardon, which has sparked sharp divisions within political circles.
With each new batch of documents, the list of names appearing in Epstein's correspondence expands, reopening a file that has remained one of the most controversial cases in the United States for years.
