كشفت وزيرة العدل الأمريكية بام بوندي أن الليبي الزبير البكوش، المشتبه في تورطه في الهجوم الذي وقع عام 2012 على السفارة الأمريكية في بنغازي، بات في قبضة الولايات المتحدة، وسيواجه تهماً تتعلق بالقتل والحرق العمد والإرهاب.
رهن الاحتجاز في قاعدة عسكرية
وأفادت بوندي في مؤتمر صحفي، أمس (الجمعة)، بأن مكتب التحقيقات الاتحادي قبض على أحد المتورطين الرئيسيين في هجوم بنغازي، ووصل إلى قاعدة أندروز الجوية في تمام الساعة الثالثة من صباح الجمعة، وهو الآن رهن الاحتجاز.
وبثت قناة «فوكس نيوز» الأمريكية لقطات حصرية لوصول البكوش إلى قاعدة عسكرية في ولاية فرجينيا قرب واشنطن. ويظهر في اللقطات رجل مسنّ أشيب ينزل بصعوبة سلم طائرة، قبل أن يُنقل على حمالة فيما كان يرتجف.
والبكوش ثالث شخص يواجه تهماً جنائية ناجمة عن الهجوم، إذا أدانت واشنطن من قبل ليبيين اثنين على الأقل لتورطهما في هجوم بنغازي. وحُكم على أحمد أبو ختالة بالسجن 22 عاماً في 2018، وعلى مصطفى الإمام بالسجن لقرابة 20 عاماً في 2020. بينما قُتل مشتبه به آخر هو علي العوني الحرزي في غارة جوية في العراق عام 2015.
وأسفر الهجوم الذي وقع 11 سبتمبر 2012 عن مقتل 4 أمريكيين، بينهم السفير الأمريكي، وكان يُعتقد في البداية أنه رد فعل عفوي خلال الاحتجاجات، ولكن تبين أنه هجوم مدبر نفذه متطرفون، بعضهم على صلة بجماعات تابعة لتنظيم القاعدة.
اقتحام المجمع الأمريكي
وكشفت المدعية العامة لمقاطعة كولومبيا الأمريكية جانين بيرو أن البكوش يواجه 8 تهم تشمل القتل العمد والشروع في القتل والحرق العمد والتآمر لدعم الإرهابيين.
وأصبح الهجوم رمزاً للفوضى في بنغازي وليبيا بشكل عام، ما سلط الضوء على عدم الاستقرار ووجود الإرهاب في المنطقة. وأدى ذلك إلى سلسلة من التحقيقات في الولايات المتحدة، اشتبك فيها الجمهوريون في الكونغرس مع وزيرة الخارجية آنذاك هيلاري كلينتون قبل ترشحها للرئاسة عام 2016 عن الحزب الديموقراطي.
الهجوم الذي نُسب إلى جماعة مسلحة مرتبطة بتنظيم القاعدة اقتحم خلاله مسلحون يحملون أسلحة آلية وقنابل يدوية المجمع الأمريكي في خضم الفوضى التي شهدتها ليبيا عقب الإطاحة بمعمر القذافي وقتله في أكتوبر 2011.
وأضرم المهاجمون النار في المبنى، ما أسفر عن مقتل ستيفنز، واختصاصي تكنولوجيا المعلومات شون سميث اختناقاً بالدخان، ثم هاجموا ملحقاً تابعاً لوكالة الاستخبارات المركزية (سي آي أيه) حيث قُتل اثنان من المتعاقدين، وكلاهما من نخبة القوات البحرية الخاصة (نيفي سيلز) سابقاً.
وأثار الهجوم، وهو الأول الذي يودي بحياة سفير أمريكي منذ عام 1970، صدمة في الولايات المتحدة وتسبب في عاصفة سياسية لإدارة الرئيس باراك أوباما، ووزيرة الخارجية هيلاري كلينتون.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed that Libyan Zubair al-Bakoush, suspected of involvement in the 2012 attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, is now in the custody of the United States and will face charges related to murder, arson, and terrorism.
In custody at a military base
Bondi stated in a press conference yesterday (Friday) that the FBI had apprehended one of the key individuals involved in the Benghazi attack, who arrived at Andrews Air Force Base at 3 a.m. on Friday and is now in custody.
Fox News aired exclusive footage of al-Bakoush's arrival at a military base in Virginia near Washington. The footage shows an elderly gray-haired man struggling to descend the steps of a plane before being transported on a stretcher while shaking.
Al-Bakoush is the third person to face criminal charges stemming from the attack, as Washington had previously convicted at least two other Libyans for their involvement in the Benghazi attack. Ahmed Abu Khatallah was sentenced to 22 years in prison in 2018, and Mustafa al-Imam was sentenced to nearly 20 years in 2020. Another suspect, Ali al-Awni al-Harzi, was killed in an airstrike in Iraq in 2015.
The attack on September 11, 2012, resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, and was initially thought to be a spontaneous reaction during protests, but it turned out to be a planned assault carried out by extremists, some of whom were linked to al-Qaeda-affiliated groups.
Storming the American compound
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Janine Piro revealed that al-Bakoush faces eight charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, arson, and conspiracy to support terrorists.
The attack became a symbol of chaos in Benghazi and Libya in general, highlighting instability and the presence of terrorism in the region. This led to a series of investigations in the United States, where congressional Republicans clashed with then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton before her presidential run in 2016 for the Democratic Party.
The attack, attributed to an armed group linked to al-Qaeda, involved gunmen armed with automatic weapons and hand grenades storming the American compound amid the chaos that engulfed Libya following the overthrow and killing of Muammar Gaddafi in October 2011.
The attackers set fire to the building, resulting in the deaths of Stevens and information technology specialist Sean Smith from smoke inhalation, before they attacked a CIA annex where two contractors, both former Navy SEALs, were killed.
The attack, which was the first to claim the life of a U.S. ambassador since 1970, shocked the United States and caused a political storm for President Barack Obama's administration and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
