أعلن المتحدث باسم الكرملين دميتري بيسكوف، اليوم (الجمعة)، اتفاق روسيا والولايات المتحدة على ضرورة استئناف المحادثات النووية بينهما، بعدما انتهت مفاعيل معاهدة «نيو ستارت» التي تحد من ترسانتي موسكو وواشنطن النووية أمس.

وقال بيسكوف للصحفيين: «هناك تفاهم، وتم بحث وعلى الجانبين التصرف بمسؤولية وسيعترفان بضرورة بدء المفاوضات بشأن هذه المسألة في أقرب وقت»، وذلك بعدما انتهت مفاعيل في وقت سابق هذا الأسبوع.

وشددت روسيا على ضرورة أن تشمل مفاوضات السيطرة على السلاح النووي ببريطانيا وفرنسا، غير أن الخارجية الأمريكية قالت إن معاهدة «نيو ستارت» لم يعد لها جدوى بعد توسيع روسيا ترسانتها النووية.

وكانت ثلاثة مصادر مطلعة قد قالت لـ «أكسيوس»، أمس، أن الولايات المتحدة وروسيا تجريان مباحثات بهدف التوصل إلى اتفاق لمواصلة الالتزام ببنود معاهدة «نيو ستارت» للحد من الأسلحة النووية، مبينة أن الدولتين تقتربان من إبرام اتفاق.

وأشار مصدران إلى أن الخطة الأولية لا تزال تتطلب موافقة رئيسي البلدين.

وتُعد معاهدة «نيو ستارت» آخر قيد رئيسي يحد من الترسانتين النوويتين للبلدين، اللذين يمتلكان معاً نحو 85% من الرؤوس النووية في العالم.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced today (Friday) that Russia and the United States have agreed on the necessity of resuming nuclear talks between them, after the effects of the "New START" treaty, which limits the nuclear arsenals of Moscow and Washington, expired yesterday.

Peskov told reporters: "There is an understanding, and it has been discussed that both sides should act responsibly and will recognize the necessity to start negotiations on this matter as soon as possible," following the expiration earlier this week.

Russia emphasized the need for nuclear arms control negotiations to include Britain and France, while the U.S. State Department stated that the "New START" treaty is no longer relevant after Russia expanded its nuclear arsenal.

Three informed sources told Axios yesterday that the United States and Russia are engaged in discussions aimed at reaching an agreement to continue adhering to the terms of the "New START" treaty for nuclear arms reduction, indicating that the two countries are close to finalizing an agreement.

Two sources noted that the initial plan still requires the approval of the leaders of both countries.

The "New START" treaty is the last major constraint limiting the nuclear arsenals of the two countries, which together hold about 85% of the world's nuclear warheads.
